BRISTOL RESIDENTS BUILD THEIR OWN FUTURE

Co-Housing Bristol is holding two open meetings on 3 November and 14 November to recruit new members to join their environmentally sustainable community.

Release date:Oct 2007.

Co-Housing Bristol are a group of local people who have formed a company to build a community of eco-homes in Bristol. They are looking for new people to join them in their intentional neighbourhood which they are designing to be socially, environmentally and financially sustainable. "This is a really exciting time for our project, and if people are interested in being part of designing it, they need to get involved now." Katherine Rooney, a member of Co-Housing Bristol.

Co-housing is a housing concept widely used in Denmark, where several homes are arranged around a central, car-free recreational space, and everyone shares the community facilities, including a common house. The whole development is designed, owned and managed by the community as a whole, but individuals also have their own private space in owned or rented properties.

By working together, Co-Housing Bristol believe they can reduce their carbon footprint through environmentally sustainable design, sharing resources and enabling more sustainable transport solutions such as car sharing, and secure storage and workshop space for bikes.

For more information about the project you can go to their website: www.cohousingbristol.org.uk.

People not Profits

Co-Housing Bristol argue that modern developments are usually built with profits in mind, not people

They hope that their development will not only be a flagship community for Bristol, but also be a model that can be replicated throughout the country, creating housing solutions for all income levels.

"We are hoping to create a mutually supportive, socially inclusive neighbourhood in Bristol. Where we and our families can live and work in a space designed by us, yet integrated into the local community... Where our children can play freely without fear of traffic and we will all know our neighbours. This is a solution to many concerns people have about modern city life; exclusion, isolation, lack of play facilities and the environment." Wayne Hynam, a member of Co-Housing Bristol.
